This course covers everything you need to start writing scripts for film or television. That includes the basics, like the correct formatting and the right software to use, as well as more advanced concepts like structuring a scene, plotting a script, and writing compelling dialog. Students will read and analyze scripts from successful films and TV shows, start work on their own scripts, and get experience workshopping each other's writing. Students finish the course with a feature-length screenplay well underway, and with the knowledge and skills they need to submit to student film festivals.

Adults: 7:00 - 9:00 PM, Tuesdays, 1/4-2/8

Other classes at Hoop Snake can be taught by request, either as one-on-one instruction or as group classes. Let us know which classes you’re interested in taking, when you’re available, and what age group the class would be for. We’ll add that class to our schedule and get in touch!

Introduction to Podcasting

A good podcast sounds effortless, but of course, they’re far from effortless to actually produce. This course covers all of the behind-the-scenes work that goes into a polished and successful show like My Brother, My Brother, and Me, Sawbones, or How Did This Get Made?. Students learn editing techniques, microphone discipline, and proper recording setup, as well as the technical and publicity skills they need to release and publicize their podcast.

Intro to Video Production

Several surveys floating around online claim that "YouTuber" is the most common dream job among kids. This course covers the art and science of recording and editing videos, with an emphasis on using the equipment students already have at home along with free software like WriterDuet and DaVinci Resolve to produce professional-grade content. Students learn to light videos, how to use camera angles and shot composition to their advantage, and how to polish their footage in post-production with color grading, motion graphics, and clean editing.

Intro to Web Development

It's easier than ever to make a pretty and functional website...assuming Squarespace or Wix has a template that looks exactly the way you want your website to look. If you want to make something new and different, something totally yours, you'll need to build it from the ground up, using HTML and CSS. This course teaches students to do just that. We cover how the internet works on that fundamental level that most users never really consider. Students learn to design, code, and upload a completely custom webpage to a server.

Introduction to Fiction Podcasting

[WAITLIST]

Shows like Welcome to Night Vale and The Magnus Archives have helped make audio storytelling popular again, especially among teenagers and young adults. Compared to film and television, the barrier to entry in fiction podcasting is quite low, making it a great medium for younger storytellers -- quite a few successful shows have been made by teams of high school students! This course teaches students a broad range of skills they'll need to write, record, edit, and publish a scripted fiction podcast, the technical know-how to get it online and listenable, and the ins-and-outs of promotions and press materials to get a show noticed.

Running & PLaying Tabletop RPGs

[WAITLIST]

Tabletop role-playing games have exploded in popularity in the past few years, especially with the advent of shows like The Adventure Zone, Friends at the Table, and Critical Role. RPGs are a fun, inexpensive, and deeply rewarding hobby that encourages social interaction, critical thinking, and creative problem solving, but getting started can be tough without someone to show you the ropes. This course helps kids learn the rules of several popular game systems, as well as the skills they need to start running games for their friends.

Intro to Video Game Development

[WAITLIST]

This course teaches students to begin developing games using the free and open-source Godot engine. This is professional-grade software used to develop games for smartphones, video game consoles, and computers. We'll develop 2D games in this course as a way to learn the basic skills underlying all game development. Students will be able to export their games to be played in a web browser and will learn the skills they need to participate in game jams in the future.
